Title

NOTICE [runaway ad and sale proposition for Betty]

Creator

Description

A black woman named Betty ran away from the house of her master Amos Day at Connecticut Farms in Union County. The slaveholder did not offer a reward for Betty's return, but warned his neighbors not to harbor or employ her. Despite Betty's absence, Amos Day offered to sell her for 10 dollars to anyone who wanted to buy her. This notice was printed in the Newark newspaper Centinel of Freedom in June 1824.

It appears that Betty left Amos Day's house 11 months prior, although it is unclear whether she stayed away the whole time or came back to the house and then left again. The previous year, in July 1823, Amos Day had issued a notice of Betty's absence and asked his neighbors not to extend credit to Betty on his account as he did not intend to pay Betty's debts.
