Description

On March 5, 1824, the New Brunswick Common Council adopted a resolution establishing a curfew for "negros or blacks" on Saturday nights at 10 PM. The Common Council empowered the Committee in relation to Paupers, Vagrants and Free Negros to detain any African Americans who were out past the curfew.

March 5, 1824.

Resolved: That the present City Treasurer, D.W. Disborough, be superseded, Carried and Rusten Hardenberg was elected by a majority of votes.

Mesers. James C Van Dyke, Nicholas Wykoff, and Nicholas Booram were appointed Street Commissioners to take the level of unpaved streets in this city.

Resolved: That the committee heretofore appointed in relation to Paupers, Vagrants and Free Negros, be authorized to employe such number of men, in conjunction with the Marshall of the city, as they may deem advisable, to take up any negros or blacks they may find out after ten oclock on saturday evenings.
