Manumission of Sarah by slaveholder Andrew Kirkpatrick

Description

Slaveholder Andrew Kirkpatrick manumitted a woman named Sarah on July 3, 1802. Sarah was between 21 and 40 years old, and her exact age was not recorded by the court.

The Middlesex County Book of Manumissions and Removals contains one record related to Sarah’s manumission. The Certificate of Manumission for Sarah, issued by Middlesex County officials John Van Nuis, Abraham Schuyler, and Elijah Phillips, appears on page 35. This document was recorded in the book by Middlesex County Clerk William P. Deare on July 7, 1802.

Middlesex County to wit

We do hereby certify that on this third day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and two Andrew Kirkpatrick of the township of North Brunswick in County of Middlesex aforesaid brought before us John Van Nuys, sole overseer of the poor of said township, and Abraham Schuyler and Elijah Phillips, two of the Justices of the peace of the said County, his female negro slave named Sarah, who on view and examination, appears to us to be sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity of obtaining a support, and also is not under the age of twenty one years, nor above the age of forty years. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hand the day and year above written. —
