Description

Slaveholder Ann Parker of North Brunswick manumitted a 35-year-old woman named Charlotte on March 21, 1817.

The Middlesex County Book of Manumissions and Removals contains two records related to Charlotte's manumission. The Certificate of Manumission for Charlotte, issued by Middlesex County officials Thomas Hance, Asa Runyon, and John Outcalt, appears on page 192-193. The Deed of Manumission signed by Ann Parker appears on page 193. These documents were recorded in the book by Middlesex County Clerk William P. Deare.

State of New Jersey, Middlesex County to wit, We do hereby certify that on this twenty first day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventeen Ann Parker of the township of North Brunswick in the said County brought before us the Overseer of the Poor of the said township and two of the Justices of the peace of the said County her slave named Charlotte, who on view and examination appears to us to be sound in mind and not under any bodily incapacity of obtaining a support and also is not under the age of twenty one years nor above the age of forty years. Witness our

Know all men by these presents, that I Ann Parker of the Township of North Brunswick in the county of Middlesex & State of New Jersey, Dowager, for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving have manumitted emancipated and set free from servitude and slavery and by these presents do fully absolutely and entirely emancipate and set free from slavery and servitude my female slave called and known Charlotte aged about thirty five years; And I do hereby for myself my heirs executors & administrators renounce relinquish and forever release to the said Charlotte all the right and estate which I now have or by law ought to have to her the said Charlotte as my slave as aforesaid and all right and claim to the services work and labor of the said Charlotte from henceforth forever, Hereby declaring and pronouncing the said Charlotte to be a free woman.— In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty first day of March in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and seventeen. —
